Premier of Caymans Alden McLaughlin attends Caymans event

Held at the Cayman Islands UK Government Office on Wednesday 5th February 2013, FOTBOT hosted an event with the Honourable Alden McLaughlin MBE, Premier of the Cayman Islands.

Premier McLaughlin, as keynote speaker for the evening, was in the UK for various engagements including a speech at Chatham House on the issue of combating corruption. Speaking alongside Premier McLaughlin were Lord Blencathra, Director of the Cayman Islands UK Government Office and former MP for Penrith and the Border, and Managing Director of FOTBOT Philip Smith.

Premier McLaughlin started his speech by expressing how 'heartwarming' it was to see people of all ages with such an interest in the Cayman Islands despite not necessarily having a connection. He highlighted the 'wonderful opportunities' within the Cayman Islands in terms of jobs and the economy and spoke at length about the progress his government has made. Having only been in office for around 8 months he expressed how proud he was to have introduced amendments to immigration laws, introduced a new law on national conservation and most recently, seen through a bill on standards in public life.

Taking questions from people who attended he expressed his hopes for the New Health City project in the Cayman Islands and problems of drug trafficking coming primarily from Jamaica. Premier McLaughlin joked about a recent 'scolding' from David Cameron with regard to some Overseas Territories' tax affairs, only for Cameron to find that he was 'scolded' back by nearly all Overseas Territories Heads of Government during a meeting on the issue. In his closing remarks he gave his thanks to FOTBOT for their continued support and organisation of the event.
