FOTBOT statement on the UK Government announcement regarding the British Indian Ocean Territory
The United Kingdom Government must not hand over the British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT) to Mauritius.
NEWS FROM FOTBOTBRITISH INDIAN OCEAN TERRITORY
The United Kingdom Government must not hand over the British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT) to Mauritius.
Commenting on the UK Government announcement that it intends to hand over BIOT to Mauritius, a spokesperson from Friends of the British Overseas Territories (FOTBOT) said:
We urge the UK Government to reconsider today’s decision on the future of the British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT). These islands have been British for over 200 years and are of critical strategic importance to both regional and Western defence. The proposed agreement, which sees the UK paying potentially billions to rent its own territory, is not only an unacceptable waste of public funds but also a dangerous compromise on our national security interests.
The vast amounts of public money spent on this misguided arrangement could instead be directed towards addressing historical wrongs and improving the welfare of the Chagossian people - a responsibility that Mauritius has neglected for decades. It's crucial to note that Mauritius is not the reliable partner it purports to be. This year alone, many Chagossians have fled Mauritius to seek refuge in the UK, citing fear of an untrustworthy government.
Furthermore, the outcome of the negotiations lack support from key stakeholders. Neither the Chagossian community nor the broader UK public endorses this course of action. British Chagossians and the UK Parliament have been denied a voice and their scrutiny. For a major constitutional change of giving away British territory, this is nothing short of undemocratic.
The UK government must prioritise national security, fiscal responsibility, and the welfare of the Chagossian people over Mauritius’ unfounded territorial claim. Continuing with the handover of BIOT is contrary to our national interests and must be halted immediately. It's time for the government to stand firm in protection of British territory and British interests.
