Friends of the British Overseas Territories Condemn Chagos Islands Agreement

London, United Kingdom – April 1, 2025 – Friends of the British Overseas Territories strongly condemns the agreement to cede the Chagos Islands. The decision is the biggest territorial capitulation in history which pays for the privilege of giving away British territory, and we would like to express our deep concern over the implications for the other Overseas Territories.

Be in no doubt, the British Overseas Territories will be horrified at this development.

We emphasise the historical and strategic significance of the Chagos Islands, arguing that this decision undermines the sovereignty and security of the British Overseas Territories. We call for immediate reconsideration of the agreement and urge the UK Government to prioritise the interests of the Overseas Territories and the self-determination of the Chagossian community.
